"What a precious Saviour and friend!"

photo of Mabel StewartBeing brought up on a farm , country life was pretty simple and straightforward. I had worked it out in my young mind that I had done no harm and only the really evil men in the world were punished by God and sent to Hell; so I was OK. I had attended church and Sunday school and had heard nothing that made me doubt my theory. It was not until a Mission came to our district that I heard the Gospel for the first time, which blew my theory out of the water.

I remember one night at the close of the meeting after hearing what Jesus had done for me, I really had to constrain myself because all I wanted to do was to turn to the big farmer sitting beside me and to give him a shake and to tell him to get out of his seat, respond to the invitation to get saved because when I got older I was going to do just that, get right with God.

"I also realized that if she could get saved, there was no reason why I could not, after all we were the same age."

I was deluded into thinking at the age of twelve I was simply too young. You can image how I felt later that night, when I had gathered in our sitting room and because our farm was close to the mission I think the whole neighbourhood was in that room, I sat and looked around for my sister, but couldn’t see her. Finally I asked mum where she was, to be told that Dorothy had stayed behind in the meeting to get saved. Dorothy and I, as many of you know, are not only sisters but also twins. We were inseparable and now for the first time I realized if the Lord should return or call I was not ready. I also realized that if she could get saved, there was no reason why I could not, after all we were the same age.

"I remembered the story in the bible how Jesus had invited the children to come to him and turned them not away."

I remembered the story in the bible how Jesus had invited the children to come to him and turned them not away. I learnt just how subtle and cunning Satan could be, deluding us whatever or age. Short time after that with tears running down my face I asked Jesus to forgive my sins and to come in and take control of my life and to be my friend. That is precisely, to this very day, what He has been doing and continues to do. What a precious Saviour and friend! I have proved Him over and over and over again.

I have just celebrated with Leslie our 30th wedding anniversary and have just notched up another year with Multiple Sclerosis. I wouldn't dare take a step without Him. I can't help but smile when I think back over the journey and it's not over yet!.....

1. I refuse to be discouraged
To be sad, or to cry;
I refuse to be downhearted,
And here's the reason why....
5. When sickness comes to weaken me,
To bring my head down low,
I call upon my mighty God;
Into His arms I go.

2. I have a God who's mighty
Who's sovereign and supreme;
I have a God who loves me,
And I am on His team.

6. The great "I Am" is with me
My life is in His hand,
The "Son of the Lord" is my hope
It's in His strength I stand

3. He is all wise and powerful,
Jesus is His name;
Though everything is changeable,
My God remains the same.

7. I give God thanks in everything
My eyes are on His face;
The battle's His, the victory is mine;
He'll help me win the race.

4. My God knows all that's happening;
Beginning to the end,
His presence is my comfort
He is my dearest friend.
