"O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemers praise!"
It is a joy and a privilege to share
with you how I came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. From an early age I was sent to Sunday School and children's meetings. We lived on the Lisburn
Road, Belfast and our Sunday School was in the next street, Ferndale Hall. This was a mission work connected to Ulsterville Presbyterian Church. Faithfully each week
we heard the truth of the Gospel and although my parents were not saved my sister Sandra and I very seldom missed.
When I was ten years old we moved to Finaghy, South Belfast, we continued at Ferndale until a little later the hall closed. I thank God for faithful servants like
Mr. John Douglas who ran the Sunday School in Ferndale. I still keep in touch with him even now. Following that, we started Sunday School at Finaghy Evangelical and my
mum was invited to a gospel mission in this church and found the Saviour, however that meant for us church services morning and evening.
One attraction for me was the hymn singing and music I would often hear a particular hymn and go home and play it one finger style on the piano. but I really
wanted to play with both hands and read music just as they did in church. My mother asked Miss Lottie McWilliam a dear Godly saint who was our church organist if she
would let me have a go on the organ and perhaps help me with the notes. So after Bible Class each sunday afternoon I stayed for a practice, her help was invaluable,
not to mention her encouragement.
However reading music properly was important so I commenced formal piano tuition and later organ tuition for pipe organ. All of this had a tremendous impact on my life,
these words touched my very soul but deep down I also knew that I was still in my sins. One evening following a service I went to a friends house and he pointed me to
the Saviour, that was on the 24th of May 1973. That particular day my mum was in hospital and had given birth to my sister Karen, so, in our family that day we had a
birth and a New Birth.
I thank God for his love and mercy
in my life and can now say - His mercy and love are unbounded, He makes me with gladness O’er flow, oh he is “ The Chief of Ten Thousand that everybody
should know.” I praise God for his direction in my life and his hand on me for over twenty years in Finaghy Church. May I recommend this Saviour of mine, I
have proved him faithful in every situation of my life. Sadly I cant say the same of myself because I have failed him often, yet praise Him, He still cares for me.
David Martin
Though I forget him and wander away,
Still he doth love me wherever I stray,
Back to his dear loving arms would I flee,
When I remember that JESUS LOVES ME.
